T.G.I.F.

Ever have one of those days where you just feel, oh, forgetful? I've had a few of those this week, today being one of them. Not so bad though. Nothing horrible happened. I'm just glad the week is over.

Today, Judah and I went to Monterey with Matt. While Matt was in class, we had lunch, went to Macy's to check on a pattern (which is officially discontinued), and then walked around the outdoor mall for a while. Judah thoroughly enjoyed a store called Thinker Toys. They had an old fashioned wooden kitchenette complete with food and cooking utensils and also a wooden train set. I started him out at the kitchenette, then took him to play with the train. Some brat-boy who was probably around 7 kept ramming his train car into Judah's and nearly stepped in front of Judah so he could continue moving his car around the track. Seven years old. Not just another toddler. I'm pretty sure I knew who this kid's sister was, because she was being a brat to another kid, too. Diane called to talk about organizing Joseph's coming home party while Judah was at the train. And he took it upon himself to crawl back to the kitchenette. He LOVED that thing! His momma's pride and joy. You know I won't have any children living in my home that will not know how to cook. :-D

Speaking of Diane and her son Joseph, he is now safely in Kuwait awaiting his flight to Hawaii. The Chews leave Sunday to meet him there, though Joseph probably will not get there until mid-week next week. So exciting! Joseph will get to CA around April 20th. Oh, I need to call Diane back with my ideas! Thanks for reminding me, Blogger!

So, I've been in contact with the pastor's wife of the church we hope will be our Family in MD. She's helped us out greatly in suggestions of apartments to look for in what cities. We MAY have already found our next home! It's perfect from what we see and hear. We really wanted to have separate space for the "office," but knew that three bedrooms are pricy. What we found has a 2-bedroom model with an extra sunroom! The room sizes are VERY comprable to what we have now, if not a teeny bigger (the kids' room would be 2 sq' bigger). So we already know all of our furniture would fit. W/D in unit, walk-in closets, hardwoods in kitchen/front door, microwave, dishwasher...just perfect. I think our biggest debate is which floor we would prefer. Bugs and flooding on bottom, noise from above and below if on the 2nd floor, and severe storm damage if on the third floor (not to mention all the stairs with two little ones). I think we lean towards the bottom -- Matt's big pull there is not having to move our furniture up and down stairs again. A huge pro to being on the 1st floor. Anyway, I could go on and on, but here's the link for those who are interested in checking out where our next life may dwell...

Alright, whoever read my blog and passed the Easter lunch info down the GBC grapevine...I hope I didn't seem pity-partyish. :-P But thank you for taking it upon yourself to spread the word. We now have a place to go -- and apparently it will be quite the gathering for people who don't have family around here. I'm excited! It should be fun! Speaking of...I need to call Janet to ask her something. Thanks again, Blogger.

I made a new recipe last night. Some of you may know that I have recently crossed over into the BBQ world because I love my husband and want to like what he likes. We've worked on creating a good basic BBQ sauce I can make at home with on-hand stuff. Mission accomplished! So I found a recipe for chicken tenders on Allrecipes.com and made it last night with my sauce and some fries. I know the response I got from the lumpia was not one of crazed excitement, but you've GOT to try this recipe. It - is - amazing! Several of the reviewers on Allrecipes said they were either the same or better than restaurant quality...they ain't kiddin'! TRY IT

Lastly, Judah loves his Tigger outfit from Mamaw and Pappy. He's really getting into knowing he has something on his shirt. He loves to get in his drawers and pull clothes out. He half-way helps us get him dressed! It's nice to hold up a sock and he puts his foot out or hold up his jacket and he puts his arm out. And beyond that, he can say door now and points to the keys if he knows we are going to leave. When Matt is gathering his stuff in the morning, Judah starts going crazy and wants to be held. He opens the front door, and as Matt is giving us kisses, Judah will push on his chest, firmly point outside, and wave vigorously. It's hilarious! ::sigh:: Isn't he just a cute little boy?

Snapshots

I feel as though my posts as of late have been about our everyday living. It's been kind of nice, actually. :-) Here's a few more snapshots of our life.

In my "Four" post a while back, I had a category describing four trivial goals. One was to finish the Noah's Ark quilt I started as soon as we found out I was pregnant with Judah. When I pulled it out to finally finish the last stitches on the binding (the last part on a quilt for those non-quilters), I realized I had not touched it except to move it out of my way since our drive to move out here! That's bad. But, I finished it in less than two hours total. I waited 2 years to finish a quilt that had less than 2 hours to go. Sheesh. But it's done now, and Judah likes it!

Unlike Tracie who pulled an "I'm pregnant" April Fool's joke on her Xanga (a good heart-stopping one), Matt pulled a good one on me. I've been having trouble sleeping due to my growing aches, pains, and belly. So Sunday night I was going to take a warm bath and then Matt was going to give me a back massage before I fell asleep. As I was getting up from the couch to start my bath, he hopped up and enthusiastically said he would draw my bath for me. I was shocked! Not only has he never offered to do this, but in my own perfectionist mind I was thinking "But he doesn't know the exact temperature I like it" and such. I protested a few times, but he apparently really wanted to be romantic and serving. So I gave in. After a few minutes, he came back from our bathroom and said the water was running. I had NOT heard the water start or our pipes knock as they usually do, so I said no he hadn't started the bath yet. He claimed over and over he did. So I "whatever"ed in my head, and walked back to my bath. He drew my bath alright...

Today, Judah and I went to sit on the lawn again. He got more adventurous and pulled on the grass alot. I managed to not let him get any extra fiber for the day. And God answered my prayer against the stinging bugs. If I had thought faster, I would have shown Judah a ladybug that landed on our blanket -- instead I picked it up and put in the grass. Some things you just have to learn as a new mom! Anyway, as we were sitting and I chatted on the phone with my dear friend Lois from church, I saw a flower delivery lady walk up our stairs. Our neighbors are gone for 2 weeks, so I knew the flowers were for us. :-D And who else would send flowers but my Flower Momma? They are gorgeously Easter, complete with a message that "He is risen!!!"

Now if only we had a place to go for lunch on Easter. I'm still not sure what to make for our first Easter dinner alone. It seems wrong to not get together with anyone, but it also seems wrong to go inviting ourselves...we've no idea how others in our church celebrate! Any ideas of what to make for an Easter lunch for 3?

Matt had Mongolian BBQ for the first time last night. Neither of us wanted lemon garlic chicken AT ALL. And Matt was really in the mood for Chinese -- which is too expensive at dinner time. So he ventured out and we went to Great Kahn in the mall. I love M-BBQ, so I'm glad he tried it. I ventured and let him order the Chicken Teriyaki for us to split. I loved it! He loved it! Dinner (with drinks) was only $8. NICE!

Oh my. I just got a little package from mi madre. Bath & Body Works Honeysuckle here I come! I told the UPS guy I wasn't sure who the package was from, but if it was from my mom, I'd already gotten flowers from her today. He said, "Christmas in April!" No kidding! Now maybe I can stop "trying" the perfume...which I did before we left the mall last night... That makes four times I've used it. I'm not sure I can say I'm "testing" it anymore. ;-)

Judah-ness

Enjoy a birthday party, the park, and a grassy patch with Judah...who by the way is already getting WAY braver and better at standing alone and taking steps alone in just a couple days!

Surprise for Us & You!

Tumultuous Tuesday

Wind

Just to let you know, our home is still in tact and none of us got blown away yesterday. :-P The wind was CUH-RAZY all day long. Our sliding door creaked and pounded all day long and Matt got rained on by sand on his way home. On our walk, Judah and I heard the creaking of the metal as the stoplights wobbled all over the place. We've been under a surf advisory -- 18 foot swells every 10-12 seconds. Wish I could have seen that! Today is much better, though on the cold side.

Glasses

Matt FINALLY got his glasses yesterday after almost 2 months of waiting. The first time, kids' frames were in his box. This time, they are the right glasses but are missing the anti-glare coating. ::sigh:: Hopefully they'll refund us for that part. On a bright note, they look SO good! Modern, high-tech, sleek. And doesn't he look oh-so-handsome in his new purple shirt and matching tie? We've been hunting for a good purple combo for about a year -- thanks, Momma!

Before & After -- I think the new rimless, angular lenses show off his Spanish eyes more. :-) (Click to see details of the frame differences.)

Easter Dress

Part of mine and Judah's walk yesterday included a stop into Motherhood Maternity. I've been on the hunt for a cute, bright, modest maternity Easter dress. Not many options, lemme tell ya -- esp. because of the modest factor. But I found one yesterday! It's a white background with a red and pink floral/paisley print, a red sash/bow at the empire waist, and a wide red hem at the knee. So cute! (Here's the black/white version.) They only had one medium left, 2 small, 1 large, 1 xlarge. I thought to myself, "No one is going to buy the medium in the next few hours before I can bring Matt back. I wonder if they hold stuff. Nah, I won't bother asking. No one will buy it." So we went back after dinner. Indeed, two hours after I had tried on the dress, someone bought the medium. And someone had also bought a small. And, they DO hold items for 24 hours. It pays to ask. ::sigh:: But, they took my name and number and said they'll call when they get another medium. Let's hope it's before Easter!

The Last First Birthday Present

At least the day ended with a birthday present, delicious hazelnut frap, and Bible study. Thanks to Mamaw, Pappy, and Aunty Mo for the cool Tigger outfit!

Taco Bell

So, there's been a running Taco Bell discussion in my comments. To set the record straight, Thea, you're second answer was correct. I get a double decker to complete my bean burrito and nachos staple. I LOVE the soft and crunchy combination. This is also achieved in the new crunch wraps, though I've only had that a couple times. :-) I have ordered pintos and cheese, but not often. And I had no idea about the meximelt -- I shall try that next time, with sour cream of course!

And is it fair to turn the tables on a preggie when memory loss is present? Hmm. What did Thea usually order. I remember one particular time you got the nachos supreme at the Taco Bell on Markham and we sat on the stools. But I'm not sure that's a regular for you. I've been trying to picture you actually eating at Taco Bell in attempt to visualize what you are holding. The only other thing that comes to mind is soft tacos. All I know that matters is that we share a love for Taco Bell like no other of my friends do! And now I really wish you were here so we could have go on a mini-date! Such fond memories...

Oh, just thoughts...

What do you use to "cut" your armpit?

The other night, we had a scare while giving Judah a bath. While we were playing, Matt noticed a red mark under his arm and was alarmed. So he raised Judah's arm, and we saw a red line in the crease of his armpit...and it looked like a long bleeding cut! Our hearts just about stopped! Then I [thankfully] instantly remembered he had been wearing a shirt with red sleeves all day. I reached out quickly to touch the redness, and sure enough -- it was a bunch of lint stuck in his armpit crease. WHEW!

Fierce Winds -- The Safe Kind

We had rain today. I was sitting here doing my Bible study while Judah napped. I knew rain was coming tomorrow and thought today was just a very gloomy day to precede the rain. It started sprinkling. Then the wind started picking up. Then all of the sudden I heard and felt the pressure on the sliding door change! Boy, was that wind FIERCE today. It was making the carport roofs wobble, our front door shift, the sliding door howl, and the rain fall in sheets. I had two thoughts, one leading to the other. First, I am SO glad that this is not the South because I'd be way afraid with that kind of wind/rain outside my house. Second, the wind was so crazy, I actually started thinking, "Ok, what if a fluke tornado DID happen here where there are no sirens...there could be one on the other side of this building and I wouldn't have warning! Yipe!" But no worries. The sun came out at sunset and the sky was mostly blue again.

1) HONEYSUCKLE -- dude, it's the smell for this pregnancy (Green Tea lotion was Judah's)...and Bath & Body Works just came out with a whole line of it! I've already "tried" their perfume 3 times when visiting the mall. Is that wrong? I mean they have a "try me" sticker on it...
2) Jasmine
3) Coconut Lime Verbena (B&BW)
4) Plumeria

Four trivial goals I have:
1) To get a professional massage
2) To finish Judah's 1 year scrapbook before Baby 2 arrives
3) To finish the Noah's Ark quilt I started for Judah before we even left Jackson almost 2 years ago (all this time, I've only had two sides of the binding to finish sewing. It'll take me all of an hour?)
4) To see if this Neapolitan Dynamite cake Matt & I came up with will work (my mom is helping me with this goal)

Four serious goals I have:
1) To continue improving my Bible study skills and committing to do it on a more daily basis
2) To deepen my prayer life
3) To start being more active to maintain a healthy pregnancy -- especially by taking frequent walks to the park with Judah
4) To serve my husband and son more often out of love for them and joy that Christ has chosen this job for me rather than just to get things done

Four things I should be doing other than this:
1) Putting the last few dishes in the dishwasher
2) Changing into pajamas
3) Brushing my teeth
4) GOING TO BED!

Hey, it's pouring down rain again...

Blessed Weekend

Matt is in between quarters. Finals week ended yesterday. That means NO homework to take up the weekend. I wish the next quarter didn't start...Monday. R.E.L.A.X. is what we intend to do today and tomorrow!

Ok, I finally got some good pics of my new hair cut. I took the time to get ready as if I was going out somewhere to see if I would like it better -- and I do! I think what happened Tuesday is that the usual life was gone from my hair because she washed it twice and then I came home and washed all the product out of my hair. It was board straight and lacked femininity that day. But I'm good with it now...I may not even have to curl the ends like I thought I would! It did set me back in the growing out process though -- note how short she cut the layers in front. The short layer does make for a cute ponytail though, with the side swept look.

Judah and I have started taking more regular walks outside. He's really getting into being out of the apartment. I don't blame him. I go stir crazy sometimes, and I'm not a curious 1 year old! I got him some new sandals the other day, and it was so cute and fun to take our walk in shorts, t-shirts, and sandals yesterday. It was gorgeous outside! Today is quite overcast, so don't get all upset with me that my weather is better than yours. ;-)

We took Judah to the doctor this morning. This seems to be a regular post of mine. He had a fever Thursday that has slowly diminished, lack of appetite, sleeping a little more, and yesterday morning we noticed some red bumps appearing on his face. Then some on his neck, and today on his belly and legs. He got the chicken pox vaccine last week, and after reading up on it we discovered that a few red spots is normal. But Judah has more than a few, so that's why we took him in. We saw Dr. K, our second favorite doctor, who has seen Judah several times when Dr. C wasn't there. She said 1) his ears look great! 2) The rash is pretty much unexplainable and viral. She said she suspected hand/foot/mouth, but after examining him ruled it out. She said it could definitely be a reaction to the vaccine, but the fever is a red herring for that explanation. So, we just keep him home from church tomorrow and wait it out for a few days which we're fine with. If he does get worse, she said, Dr. C is on call this weekend. Yeah!

We did tell her that we had tried going to whole milk, but his mouth/chin kept reacting. So we have been working on a switch to soy milk this week. We told her the different dairy things he reacts to, and Matt mentioned he thought it seemed that cooked dairy is ok (like cheese) while raw is not (milk). She affirmed that and actually explained to us why -- when you cook it, the cow protein changes shape and the body may not react to the new shape like it does the original. Way to go, Matt! She said soy is a good option for us, and to keep giving him cheese to help with calcium intake.

Anyway, those are the big updates from this week. I get to RELAX with my non-homework hubby now!

Daddy Time

This is one of Judah's favorite activities. Matt has a keen ability to draw out hysterical laughter from our son...and I cherish it (and giggle at both of them)!

And check out these cute pics Matt snapped of him while I was getting my hair cut (pics of that to come...maybe...).

4 Activities of a Cute Kid

Toothbrushing with kid toothpaste.

Showing off a little communication skill.

Finally eating at least a little bit of his first birthday cake. Just one ear of the little lion. Just his parents as an audience.

Some general play time that shows a chase game, cruising the coffee table, coaster banging, Momma snuggling, and camera exploring.

1 Yr. Check-up Stats

Height: 29 1/4" (50th percentile)
Weight: 20 lb 15 oz (25th percentile...a step up from last time)
Head: 48.9 cm (100th percentile!!! but the doc says that's still fine, so no worries)

We starting to see if we can transition to whole cow's milk. Two hurdles: 1) Judah prefers room temperature beverages, 2) Will he be allergic intestinally? We know that dairy makes him get a little rashy around his mouth, but Dr. C said that's ok as long as it doesn't get hive-ish or angry looking. He also told us to rub some on his forearm to see what it would do...nothing. So that's good. I'm guessing it will take at least a few days. He didn't like formula at first, and now he loves it. If the cow's milk ends up being a no go, Dr. C said soy milk is fine. ANYTHING but the $23 canister-a-week of formula will be great!

Dr. C said NOT to stop paci/thumb sucking right now due to a new baby coming and the move in Sept. I'm totally fine with that one! One less change to worry about right now!

He got three thigh shots and a TB test in the arm...and Matt couldn't go to the appt. with us. Judah didn't even flinch at the TB test. He looked at it with curiosity instead. However...the shots were another story. But he recovered quickly. The poor nurse. I said "uh-oh" in a playful voice when she walked in, and she said she always hears that. She made another sad comment when she was leaving, and I said he'll thank her for it when he is older. It must stink to always make kids cry but know that it's for their own good. :-P

As a side note, Dr. C always makes it a point to ask how I am doing with the new pregnancy and such. I told him it was overwhelming to have a son turning 1 and be in my fifth month of pregnancy. He said his mom-in-law once told his wife "If one takes up all your time, two can't." True! He said he knows a woman who has 5 kids under the age of 1...triplets the first time, twins the second. Her OB claims she "got pregnant in the car on the way home." Praise the LORD He did not choose that plan for us! Dr. C at some point when we were discussing the next baby said "Now, you two have figured out how this [making babies] works, right?" with a funny sparkle in his eye. I assured him we did.

Finally, Judah's left ear is perfectly normal and Dr. C said he was very pleased with that. His right ear, however, still has some fluid in it. So, we'll be staying on the antibiotic until sometime between April 15-30 whenever we choose to stop it. Not too bad I guess. At least there's a stopping point in view now. Let's just pray the ear infections don't come back!

I wish I could video Judah all day long -- he is changing so rapidly intellectually! Smarter, more independent, able to make choices, starting to self-feed more, figuring out how more things work, communicating his wants with babble and gestures, more openly disobeying >:-, and so much more. It's amazing to watch! To think, we all started out this way! It's odd to think that someday I'll have a teenage son sitting at my table eating his own dinner while I eat mine and talking to me about all he did that day when I was not with him. :-)

Also, pics to come of his first OFFICIAL hair cut. Hailey got a salon cut yesterday for the first time, and I mentioned to Aut that I've been wanting to cut (not just trim) Judah's hair, esp. the cowlick area, but have been too nervous since his hair is still so thin/fine. But, before his bathtime last night, the courage came. I just did it. And I say I did a pretty good job considering it was a 1 year old sitting on his daddy's lap waiting to take a bath and hair that is fine and silky. I was able to blend most of it quite well, which was a relief. No more natural baby do! He's a clean cut kid now. :-D

Housekeeping

Found a few better pics of Judah's first b-day outfit, including some showing his love for baloons. He thinks they make a great bed, too.

We gave Judah an ear off of his lion cake Sunday after dinner. We figured maybe he'd actually eat it with only his parents watching rather than the world. He poked at it a few times, then picked up the whole thing and stuffed it in his mouth! Then happily sucked his thumb...which is pretty much all he did when doing the "cake" part of his party. He's the only kid I've seen NOT get really excited about having a whole personal cake in front of him.

We've decided on the set of dishes that will replace our black set and our fiesta set. We'll keep the white square set and then have this one. We're trying out this one place setting until our Kohl's opens here in Salinas in April...they'll for sure have a Grand Opening sale then!

And...today was the day. I can no longer say I have perfect vision. :-P It is AMAZING how much even this mild prescription helps with computer work, reading, and driving (esp. at night). What do you think? I got several shots, the close-up being so you can see the frames better.

My appointment last Friday went well. Hopie went with us and got to hear the strong heartbeat. I'm feeling the baby move and kick more every day. I've only gained 9 pounds so far this pregnancy...and am still 5 pounds below my PRE-PREG weight with Judah! Woo hoo! April 13 is the day we go for the gender ultrasound...start praying the baby cooperates! This pregnancy seems to be flying by much faster except for this one area -- finding out what the baby is! Still working on coming up with a boy's name, though there is one that Matt is gung ho about...and I may be coming around to it. We'll see!

The First Birthday Week

Just so you know, this post took FOREVER to do...many much pictures to edit and upload. But I want to share and I know that you all want to see. All I'm sayin is you'd better enjoy! ;-)

What a busy week we had last week! My parents and little sister were able to come for the week of Judah's first birthday. First, here are some random picturse throughout the week...

Heavy Duty...

We tried to get some pics of his first birthday outfit (that I've had my eye on for a while!). He was much too active at the time to get a still shot, though. It's SO adorable on him! Blue/orange/white plaid button down with orange sweater vest and khakis. Mmm, he's a looker!

People pics...

The gorgeous spring time hills around here...

One GORGEOUS day, we took the time to do the 17 Mile Drive. We did the Drive when Matt's family was here, but it was foggy then. So it's nice to have seen the coast in both its seasons. Esparza fam, enjoy the pics -- I so wish you could have seen the coast in all it's glory! Matt didn't go with us this time because of class. :-( Take a look at God's creation...

It was Judah's first birthday party...and our first time to be the parents to throw the kid's party. We kept it simple -- some finger foods and punch, cupcake cones, and presents at a local park/playground. Cupcake cones? Yep! Back of the Betty Crocker box. I've wanted to try them for months, so I saw this as the perfect opportunity. ALL you do is make regular cupcakes -- make the batter, put the liners in the muffin pan, fill each 2/3 full, then invert a cone on top of the batter, bake as directed. Peel off the paper once cool and ice! So basically it's just one EASY extra step to have cupcake cones rather than regular cupcakes. I made them the night before, and the cones softened over night which we all agree was tastier than a crunchy cone. Some of them, as you can see, got a little too soft. :-P Now the cone is so soft I just eat the cake out of it. And, you'll note the improper spelling. When you have two cupcakes in a row with a Y on them, be careful not to put a Y on the third! I did fix it and it looked totally fine...we just forgot to take a pic of the real finished product! Sorry, Judah! And he loves balloons! Especially when someone flies him like a superhero through the air to dive bomb them. :-)

The turn out was great, more than we thought. Key families from Hollister that have meant alot to us in our journey with Judah, two neighbor families from our apartment building, and two college buddies all came. The weather was gorgeous despite some gusty wind. Judah, however, was battling allergies. Poor little guy! (We took him to the doctor on Friday because we feared impending ear infection, but it turns out he's showing signs of allergies. No surprise there -- he just keeps following his Momma's footsteps.) He seemed pretty laid back and quiet for almost the whole time with red, watery eyes and a runny nose...but when he opened his presents, the Judah we know started reappearing. He got some really adorable clothes, stuffed animals (including a Sneetch!), a book, and some musical instruments. He LOVES the instruments, especially the alligator xylophone.

Did he get to blow out a birthday candle? Nope. We couldn't even get the lighter to stay lit because of the wind. No amount of people barrier would block it either. So oh well. He'll have plenty more candles to blow out in the years to come!

After the party, my dad treated us and our two college buddies to dinner at Chevy's...there was no way my mom and I were gonna cook after doing the party. :-) So Judah Gabriel Esparza's first birthday dinner was at a Mexican restaurant. I guess that's kind of appropriate. ;-) Not that he tasted anything except the tortilla...he had roast beef and veggies from home.

It's so odd to say "our little 1 year old" now! AND...he now gets to face forward in his brand new carseat from us! Woo hoo! We can not thank God enough for the joy that Judah is!
